FAD/UNAD Project

UNAD has entered into second phase partnership with the Finnish Association of the Deaf (FAD) to implement a 3 year project titled”sign language and advocacy project in Uganda”. The project will runs from 2011-2013. The direct beneficiary is the Ugandan Deaf population who will be reached e.g. through the regional branches and the trainings in the districts and by the spreading of the knowledge of sign languagethrough accessing services from service provides and school teachers trained in sign language under the project. The Deaf will also benefit from the advocacy and information work of UNAD.

The direct beneficiaries of the project are estimated 800 Deaf people in the 4 districts of operation, who will receive training. Others are 300 family members of these Deaf, as well as 80 service providers (doctors, nurses, social workers and police) who will be trained, as well as the Government of Uganda.
Deaf persons will directly participate in sign language training activities, advocacy, marking flag days and information work. Family members of the deaf, teachers and service providers will also participate in sign language training programmes. The long-term development objective of this project is for the Deaf people in Uganda to achieve equality, human rights, access to opportunities and participation in society.

The development objective will be achieved if Deaf people are able to communicate with other members of the society. This is the first direct objective of the project. The ability to communicate can only take place if sign language is known by Deaf people, family members, service providers and teachers of the Deaf.

In addition, the development objective can only be attained on a sustainable basis if society respects sign language and appreciates its significance. This is the second direct objective of the Project. Such respect and appreciation is expected to be achieved as result of advocacy and information work. The expected results of this project are;

  • Improved communication between deaf children and adults and at least 300 family members.
  • Enhanced communication with at least 80 service providers (medics, police) so as to increase deaf people access to services (accessing medical care in government hospitals and health centers, receiving justice) and social, political interaction with the community.
  • Improved sign language and leadership skills of leaders of UNAD in approximately 4 new districts of operation
  • Improved advocacy and information work by UNAD focusing on significance of sign language and the need for deaf people to access sign language interpretation services and other related services provided by the government, NGOs and the private sector.
  • Ensured that the current sign language interpreters training programme is maintained at Kyambogo University
